SMHS Panther Basketball
Tonight we recognized the SMHS Panther boys basketball team for making the final four of the state tournament. Congratulations to the coaches and the team. Your hard work really paid off.
Cumberland County Commission Meeting
The March 2022 meeting of the Cumberland County Commission was held tonight with all Commissioners in attendance except Darrell Threet. The first item on the agenda under New Business was an agreement for the provision of Inmate Health Services. The new contract was approved 17-0.
The following resolutions were considered, with the sponsor being in parenthesis.
RESOLUTION 04-2022-1 – TO ACCEPT OFFER(S) TO PURCHASE DELINQUENT TAX PROPERTY OWNED BY CUMBERLAND COUNTY (HYDER)
The following delinquent tax properties were approved for purchase and will now go back on the tax rolls. The commission approved the resolution unanimously.

RESOLUTION 04-2022-2 – TO APPOINT MEMBERS TO THE CUMBERLAND COUNTY “E-911” EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS (FOSTER)
Doctor Kimberly Peaslee was reappointed, and John Stubbs was appointed to the ECD Board of Directors with terms to expire April 30, 2026. The vote to approve was unanimous.
RESOLUTION 04-2022-3 – TO APPOINT MEMBERS TO THE CUMBERLAND COUNTY BOARD OF EQUALIZATION (FOSTER)
Willie Freeman, Bill Hargis, Daniel Husk, Levon Hubbard, and Teddy Wanamaker were appointed to the Board of Equalization in a unanimous vote. This board reviews property owner complaints regarding property tax assessments.
RESOLUTION 04-2022-4 – TO APPROVE THE APPOINTMENT OF AN EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES MEDICAL DIRECTOR (FOSTER)
Dr. James Wojcik was appointed the new EMS Medical Director, and his contract was approved in a unanimous vote. The contract expires on October 31, 2023.
RESOLUTION 04-2022-5 – TO APPLY TO THE TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT FUNDS (NORRIS)
This resolution, approved unanimously, allowed for the application of grant funds that would allow for improvement projects at licensed and pre-licensed childcare operations. A public hearing has been held to determine interest and need.
The following budget resolutions were approved 16-0-1 with Commissioner Cooper abstaining:

Financial Update
EMS collections for the month were $395,903 which is $62,570 above the monthly budgeted amount of $333,333. Year to date we have collected $3,422,327 which is $422,330 above projections.
Sales tax collections for the General Purpose School Fund came in at $965,550 which is approximately $34,002 above projections. Year to date we have collected $9,027,365 and are approximately $718,957 above budget.
Property tax collections year to date are approximately 99.2%. Last year we had collected 98.4% of revenue.
Cumulative Hotel/Motel taxes are $789,373 which is 97.6% of the budgeted amount of $808,712. Last year, with a smaller budgeted amount of $668,166, we had collected $492,102, or 73.65% of budget, at this point.
Cumulative Prisoner Boarding collections are $268,086, or 44.5% of the $602,396 annual budget. Last year we were at $305,409, or 50.7% of the $602,396 annual budget. Payments for prisoner boarding are somewhat sporadic from the state.
COVID-19 Update
The state of Tennessee has moved to reporting COVID-19 data on a weekly basis on Wednesday of each week for the previous Sunday through Saturday. This report includes data for the week ending April 9th.
According to the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH), in Cumberland County there are 9 active cases of COVID-19. There have been 326 cumulative deaths reported as of the date of this newsletter. Cumberland County Schools Update
According to Director of Schools Dr. Ina Maxwell, as of Friday, April 14, for the first time in the two-year Covid number reporting journey, the school system has zero active cases and zero quarantines.
