CC Notes – July 17th 2017
All Commissioners were in attendance for the regular monthly meeting of the County Commission except Nancy Hyder, Elbert Farley, and Roy Turner. The night’s agenda was unusually short, with only two resolutions to be considered.
Resolutions
The first resolution of the evening concerned the library and Norfolk Southern Railroad. Cumberland County was recently notified that a portion of the Art Circle Public Library and parking lot were built on land owned by Norfolk Southern Railroad. The building of the library predates my time on the Commission, but in an effort to resolve the issue the Building and Grounds Committee recommended that the County pay the $40,000 sales price requested by the railroad. The motion to purchase the property passed unanimously.
The next, and final item on the agenda dealt with funding for the Fair Park Senior Center. The land the center is on is owned by the county, however joint ownership of the building after the construction cost was split by the city and county many years ago. The center is responsible for day to day costs of operation as well as maintenance on the building. Three out of five of the HVAC units in the building are out of service. The cost to get them running is $12,000 but the center is unable to meet that need with their funds. The Building and Grounds Committee recommending providing funds up to $6,000 out of the county’s fund balance to pay half the cost, pending approval of the City of Crossville giving an equal amount of funding. The resolution passed 14 – 1 with Commissioner Woody Geisler voting against.
Financial Report
No financial report was given as final numbers to close out the fiscal year are still coming in.
