The agenda for the January meeting of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners was a short one consisting of only two resolutions. The first resolution was to approve extending the life of ambulance unit 463 for one year. Several months ago, a resolution was passed that detailed the regulations for the operation of ambulance, convalescent and invalid services in CumberlandCounty. This was done to ensure that all providers of these services were competing on a level playing field with similar equipment and services. Part of the regulations included a provision stating that vehicles shall not be more than 10 years old from the date of new sale or have more than 225,000 miles on the odometer. The CumberlandCountyEMS ambulance unit 463 is over in age but under in mileage and is still in good shape. The resolution requested the waiving of the 10 year rule for this vehicle. As it is not unusual to provide a grace period for the implementation of regulations, the resolution passed in a 15-3 vote with Commissioners Sabine, Harvel and Brown voting against.
The second resolution on the agenda was to ask our legislative delegation to work toward making the sale of synthetic drugs a felony and to request the support of surrounding counties. You may be aware that in September of 2011 a joint raid was conducted by the TBI, State Attorney General’s Office, Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, Crossville Police Department and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department. During the raid, several convenience stores in CumberlandCounty were found to be selling synthetic marijuana and designer stimulants. Some of the products are actually sold legally and some fall under legislation making their sale only a misdemeanor. The resolution, which is basically a lobbying request on behalf of the County, passed unanimously.
County Attorney Randal Boston reported on the recent ruling by the Tennessee Supreme Court concerning SmithMountain. The ruling basically remands the case back to the lower court for consideration.
